The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. Summary

Talonavicular coalition (TC), a rare cause of foot pain, can significantly impact adolescent mobility. Surgical resection and tibialis posterior repositioning effectively resolved pain in a bilateral TC case.

Background:

  • Talonavicular coalition (TC) is an uncommon cause of pediatric foot pain.
  • Symptomatic TC can severely limit patient mobility and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case of bilateral talonavicular coalition in an adolescent.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of surgical intervention for symptomatic TC.

Main Methods:

  • A 14-year-old male with bilateral TC and medial foot pain underwent surgical resection of the coalition.
  • Tibialis posterior tendon repositioning was performed concurrently.

Main Results:

  • The patient experienced complete pain resolution at the 12-month follow-up.
  • Surgical treatment demonstrated positive outcomes for bilateral TC.

Conclusions:

  • Talonavicular coalition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of adolescent medial foot pain.
  • Surgical intervention offers an effective treatment for symptomatic talonavicular coalition, providing lasting pain relief.
