Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the prevalence and characteristics of abuse experienced by individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Italy.
  • To identify risk factors and victim profiles associated with abuse in the MS population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional observational study (SocialMS) using anonymous, self-administered questionnaires.
  • Data collected on demographics, MS characteristics, social determinants of health, and abuse experiences.
  • Disability assessed using the Patient Determined Disease Steps (PDDS) scale; statistical analyses included logistic regression and clustering.

Main Results:

  • 1004 participants with MS were included; 23.4% reported experiencing abuse (emotional, sexual, physical, financial).
  • Victim profiles included younger age, living alone, higher BMI, smoking, comorbidities, greater disability, female sex, non-heterosexual orientation, lower health literacy, and poor socioeconomic status.
  • Over half of respondents believed MS increased abuse risk, especially those with higher disability levels.

  • The study underscores the ethical and social imperative to protect vulnerable individuals with MS.
  • Findings provide a foundation for developing targeted interventions and future research on abuse prevention in MS populations.
