Insights
Sleep disorders significantly impact children's health, with disparities affecting marginalized groups. This review examines global non-respiratory sleep health inequalities in children and proposes interventions.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Sleep Medicine
- Global Health Equity
- Child Development
Background:
- Sleep is crucial for children's health and well-being.
- Non-respiratory and behavioral sleep disorders negatively affect children and families.
- Significant global health disparities in sleep exist, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review worldwide findings on non-respiratory sleep health disparities in children.
- To examine the contributing factors to these disparities.
- To explore potential interventions to mitigate sleep health inequalities.
Main Methods:
- Systematic literature review of global studies.
- Analysis of non-respiratory sleep disorders in pediatric populations.
- Examination of socioeconomic and demographic factors influencing sleep health.
Main Results:
- Identified significant global disparities in pediatric non-respiratory sleep health.
- Highlighted the impact of socioeconomic status, geographic location, and health literacy.
- Documented the influence of these disparities on quality of life.
Conclusions:
- Addressing non-respiratory sleep health disparities requires targeted global interventions.
- Interventions should focus on vulnerable and minoritized communities.
- Improving sleep health equity is essential for child well-being worldwide.
Abstract:
Sleep is an important component of overall health, especially in children and adolescents. Non-respiratory and behavioral sleep disorders can have a major impact on the health and quality of life of patients and their families. Health disparities exist globally, most negatively affecting those from minoritized communities, from rural communities, and those with low socioeconomic status or low health literacy. We review findings around non-respiratory sleep health disparities in children worldwide and examine contributing factors and potential interventions to address these disparities.
