Abstract:
The current review examines the impact of discrimination on sleep health outcomes from childhood through adulthood, drawing on a range of studies that investigate the role of both personal and societal discrimination. The results demonstrated that discrimination can lead to reduced sleep quality, increased insomnia, and lower adherence to treatments like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Children and adolescents from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds are especially vulnerable, with poor sleep resulting in poor academic outcomes. In adults, discrimination correlates with reduced CPAP use among Black patients with obstructive sleep apnea, even after accounting for other variables. The findings highlight the need for clinicians to screen for discrimination-related stress, deliver culturally sensitive care, and advocate for policy changes that address structural inequities contributing to sleep health disparities.
