How many minutes should we take for withdrawal - guideline recommendations and upcoming evidence

Abstract:
Inspection of the colonic mucosa usually takes place during endoscope withdrawal from the caecum to the anal canal. A certain amount of time is needed to detect relevant pathology and ensure high quality colonoscopy. Previous guidelines recommended that withdrawal time in normal procedures should be at least 6 min, but more recent evidence suggests that this may be too short to achieve the desired level of polyp detection and prevent post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer. This narrative review describes the most important evidence supporting the guideline recommendations and gives an overview of auxiliary interventions and devices to improve inspection during colonoscope withdrawal.
