Background:

  • The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Tests Level 1 (YYIRTL1) and Level 2 (YYIRTL2) are commonly used in elite soccer.
  • Limited knowledge exists regarding their association with and prediction of match performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between YYIRTL1 and YYIRTL2 and match running performance in male professional soccer players.
  • To assess the predictability of these tests for match running performance.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven professional male soccer players completed YYIRTL1 and YYIRTL2.
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) data collected match running performance (high-intensity, high-speed, sprinting distances).
  • Correlational and univariate linear regression analyses were used.

Main Results:

  • YYIRTL1 showed strong correlations with high-intensity running (HIR) (r = 0.79) and high-speed running (HSR) (r = 0.73).
  • YYIRTL1 explained 63% of the variance in in-game HIR.
  • YYIRTL2 demonstrated weaker associations with HIR and HSR, and no significant predictive ability for HSR or sprinting (SPR).

Conclusions:

  • The YYIRTL1 is strongly associated with in-game HIR in male professional soccer players.
  • The YYIRTL1 may serve as a predictor of in-game high-intensity running performance.
  • Neither test demonstrated significant predictive ability for high-speed or sprinting performance.
