Discrimination of three Termitomyces species by HS-GC-IMS volatile profiles combined with biomarkers

Abstract:
The present research developed biomarkers based on volatile compounds for characterizing and identifying Termitomyces titanicus, T. intermedius and T. bulborhizus, using headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS). Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed based on signal intensity of identified volatile compounds, and results indicate that the species can be differentiated. Subsequently, biomarkers were identified and confirmed by orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA). Most notably, methyl hexanoate-D and 1-propanethiol were identified as biomarkers for T. intermedius, while acrylonitrile served as a primary marker for T. titanicus. The results showed that volatile profiles coupled with biomarkers are a highly sensitive and species specific identification method, which can be used to discriminate between different Termitomyces species.
