A rare congenital anomaly, left aortic arch with right descending aorta, is diagnosed using plain radiography and esophagram. These imaging techniques can often eliminate the need for aortography in diagnosing this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular imaging
    • Congenital heart disease
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Left aortic arch with right descending aorta is a rare congenital anomaly.
    • Understanding its imaging characteristics is crucial for diagnosis.

    Observation:

    • Reviewed 13 previously reported cases and 3 new cases.
    • Evaluated plain radiographic and esophagram findings.

    Findings:

    • Characteristic radiographic and esophagram findings can diagnose the anomaly.
    • Aortography is often unnecessary.
    • Vascular rings were associated in 5 of 16 patients.

    Implications:

    • Plain radiography and esophagram are effective diagnostic tools.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Further studies may be required for symptomatic vascular rings.
  • This knowledge aids in diagnosing rare aortic arch anomalies.
