Practical implementation of capacitive deionization (CDI) for phosphorus (P) recovery is often limited by the performance of electrode materials and the overlooked impacts of coexisting natural organic matter. To address these challenges and enable synergistic electro-adsorption of P and electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants, this study developed a novel mesoporous carbon-embedded CoFe alloy (CoFeMC-X, where X denotes the pyrolysis temperature) derived from a Prussian blue analogue via a facile pyrolysis method. By optimizing the pyrolysis temperature, the CoFeMC-900 electrode achieved a high P adsorption capacity of 6.65 mg P·g-1 and a reaction rate constant of 0.011 min-1 at 1.2 V, attributed to the combined contribution of electric double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. The captured P was readily desorbed through polarity reversal and chemical washing. Moreover, the adverse effects of humic acid (HA) on P removal performance were effectively mitigated by promoting Faradaic degradation at an increased applied voltage of 3 V, achieving a P removal efficiency of 97.2 %. The practical applicability of CoFeMC-900 electrode was further validated through real secondary effluent tests and cyclic stability assessments. This study advances the understanding of efficient P recovery from HA-containing real wastewater by leveraging the synergistic contributions of non-Faradaic and Faradaic reactions in CDI.
