[Ultrasound screening of abdominal aortic aneurysms : Start of the evaluation]

Since the introduction of ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms for men aged 65 years and older in the standard services catalogue of the statutory health insurance, this early detection examination has been the subject of ongoing controversy. There have also been calls to extend ultrasound screening to women and younger individuals at increased risk. By commissioning an evaluation by an independent research organization in 2025, the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) has taken an initial step toward a critical review of the existing ultrasound screening program. The evaluation results are expected to become available in the second half of 2026. The G‑BA will then be able to decide whether the ultrasound screening should be continued in its current form or needs to be further developed in an evidence-based and patient-centered manner.
