Neurochemical biomarkers in major depressive disorder

Abstract:
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a widespread and debilitating condition, with diagnosis currently relying on subjective clinical assessments that can lead to inconsistencies and limit treatment prediction. The identification of objective neurochemical biomarkers holds promise for improving diagnostic accuracy, personalizing treatment, and monitoring therapeutic response in MDD patients. This narrative review evaluates the clinical utility of various neurochemical biomarkers in MDD, including neurotransmitter function, inflammation, neurotrophic factors, and metabolic processes. Its strengths, limitations, and potential to enhance diagnosis, treatment strategies, and prognosis have been explored. Challenges such as the heterogeneity of MDD, methodological variability, and environmental influences on biomarker levels are also addressed. This review emphasizes the potential of biomarker-guided approaches to revolutionize MDD management by tailoring treatments to individual neurochemical profiles and facilitating the development of novel, targeted interventions. Future research should focus on multidimensional studies, standardized methods, and advanced analytical techniques to identify reliable biomarker signatures for classifying MDD subtypes and predicting treatment outcomes. This review aims to inform future research directions and promote the development of biomarker-based strategies for improved diagnosis and treatment of MDD, ultimately enhancing the lives of those affected by this disorder.
