Computed Tomography

9.2K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Anatomy
  • Biomechanical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Feline tibia morphology is crucial for understanding biomechanics.
  • Detailed morphometric data is essential for surgical planning and implant design.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the three-dimensional external and internal morphology of the feline tibia.
  • To measure bone length, diameters, cortical thickness, cancellous bone volume, and joint angles using CT.

Main Methods:

  • Eight paired feline tibiae were analyzed using computed tomography (CT).
  • Morphometric parameters were measured in triplicate for each bone.
  • Mean values were recorded for statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • Tibia length averaged 111.61mm.
  • Internal diameters varied along the tibia, with narrowest points at 50% (mediolateral) and 75% (craniocaudal).
  • Cancellous bone volume was greater proximally (12.45mm³) than distally (2.09mm³). Key joint angles were quantified.

Conclusions:

  • CT effectively estimated internal bone morphometry and joint geometry in feline tibias.
  • The generated data is valuable for planning and developing novel internal fracture fixation techniques in cats.
