INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE OF NONINFECTIOUS UVEITIS: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Non-infectious uveitis (NIU) is more common in adults than children. Its incidence and prevalence are elevated in patients with conditions such as Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and Ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

- A comprehensive systematic literature search was performed across major electronic databases (Ovid Medline, Embase, Scopus) covering publications from 2020 to September 2025.
- Data on NIU incidence and prevalence were extracted and pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis, considering various demographic and comorbidity contexts.
Main Results:
- The meta-analysis included 106 studies out of 15,172 initial records.
- Pooled prevalence of NIU was 131.6 per 100,000 for adults and 27.4 per 100,000 for pediatrics.
- Pooled incidence was 204.4 per 100,000 person-years for adults and 16.0 per 100,000 person-years for pediatrics.
- Significantly higher NIU incidence and prevalence were observed in individuals with Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), undifferentiated Spondyloarthritis (SpA), Psoriatic arthritis (PsA), Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and Behcet disease (BD).
- For JIA, prevalence was 129.2 per 1,000 and incidence was 22.4 per 1,000 person-years.
- For SpA, prevalence was 153.5 per 1,000 and incidence was 33.5 per 1,000 person-years.
- For PsA, prevalence was 27.3 per 1,000 and incidence was 13.1 per 1,000 person-years.
- Prevalence for AS and BD was 183.5 per 1,000 and 148.6 per 1,000, respectively.
Conclusions:
- Non-infectious uveitis demonstrates a higher incidence and prevalence in adult populations compared to pediatric populations.
- Specific autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, notably JIA and AS, are associated with increased rates of NIU.
