The Value of Normal Skin Biopsy for Routine Histopathological Diagnosis of Clinically Invisible Dermatoses: A Review

Abstract:
Sampling normal-appearing skin can be a feasible, minimally invasive tool for diagnosing specific systemic diseases and certain "clinically invisible" dermatoses that may show microscopic findings but lack specific cutaneous lesions. Herein, we review the clinical contexts in which biopsy of normal-appearing skin may be indicated for routine histopathological assessment and diagnosis of primary dermatoses or systemic disorders that may otherwise require sampling of internal organs. We also discuss the most appropriate body sites, techniques, and diagnostic histological findings for each of these clinical scenarios.
