Background:

  • The relationship between central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains unclear.
  • Novel biomarkers are needed to assess this association.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between CSC and CVD risk using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based retinal biomarker.
  • To evaluate the utility of a novel AI software in predicting CVD risk in CSC patients.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study included 109 CSC patients and 1028 non-CSC controls.
  • A validated AI software (Dr.Noon CVD) analyzed retinal images to generate a five-year CVD risk score.
  • Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used for balancing, followed by weighted t-tests and multivariable linear regression.

Main Results:

  • The mean AI-derived CVD risk score was significantly higher in the CSC group compared to controls (32.26 vs. 29.87, p=0.024) after IPTW.
  • CSC was independently associated with a 2.14-point increase in the CVD risk score (p<0.001) in the weighted multivariable regression model.

Conclusions:

  • CSC is associated with a higher AI-derived cardiovascular risk score.
  • These findings suggest CSC may be an ocular manifestation of systemic vascular pathology.
  • Diagnosis of CSC warrants a comprehensive cardiovascular health assessment.
