Interfacial Tribofilm Evolution and Wear Mechanisms of Custom Specific Nylon Rotating Bands under Simulated Artillery

Abstract:
Investigating the friction mechanism of nylon rotating band materials during the operation of artillery is of great significance for the subsequent design and further application of nonmetallic rotating band. In this study, specific nylon applied in artillery rotating bands was prepared and the friction performance of this specific nonmetallic rotating bands and barrel steel specimens (20CrNi3MoV) was investigated under different external conditions. The results show that the coefficient of friction exhibits distinct regularities in response to changes under the aforementioned external conditions. The wear volume of the specific nylon surface shows a positive correlation with the friction interface temperature and different sliding velocities; specifically, the wear volume increased by 78.85% under variable temperature conditions, whereas the increase reached 105.6% under different velocity conditions. Dynamically stable tribofilms were formed on the surfaces of both the specific nylon and the barrel steel specimens, the thickness of the tribofilm on the nylon surface (98.87 nm) was significantly greater than that on the barrel steel surface (7.93 nm), and the films were composed of elements including Fe, O, Cr, and Mo. The findings of this study provide support for revealing the friction mechanism of nylon rotating bands during their operation and lay a foundation for their further optimized design and practical application.
