Area of Science:

  • Robotic surgery
  • Surgical education
  • Medical technology

Background:

  • Access to experienced surgeons for robotic procedures is limited.
  • Telementoring offers remote guidance for surgical trainees.
  • Safety and efficacy of telementoring in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) need evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and feasibility of telementoring in RARP.
  • To evaluate trainee performance during telementored RARP procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study of 23 RARP cases.
  • Utilized the Intuitive Telepresence platform® for telementoring.
  • Assessed performance using Global Evaluative Assessment of Robotic Skill (GEARS) and objective outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Telementoring was safely implemented in all RARP cases.
  • Minimal blood loss and no mentor console intervention were required.
  • Mentors achieved significantly higher GEARS scores than trainees, particularly in efficiency and force sensitivity.

Conclusions:

  • Telementoring is feasible for initial RARP steps using the Intuitive Telepresence platform.
  • Further studies are needed to assess telementoring for complex procedures and long-term outcomes.
