Summary

Patch testing (PT) during pregnancy is safe and does not alter test outcomes in early to mid-gestation. This study found no significant differences in allergic contact dermatitis reactions between pregnant individuals and controls.

Background:

  • Patch testing (PT) is often deferred during pregnancy due to limited data on its safety and potential impact on test results.
  • However, PT is not teratogenic and can improve quality of life for pregnant individuals with suspected allergic contact dermatitis.
  • This study investigated PT outcomes in pregnant women at a tertiary Israeli dermatology clinic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if pregnancy influences the results of patch testing.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of performing PT during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case-control study was conducted from 2009 to 2023.
  • 54 pregnant women who underwent PT were identified and matched with three non-pregnant controls.
  • Data on positive patch test reactions and common allergens were analyzed.

  • No significant differences in positive patch test reaction rates were observed between pregnant women and controls.
  • Nickel sulfate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and fragrance mix II were the most frequent allergens identified in pregnant patients.
