Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

2.2K
Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not...

Summary

This study investigated microRNA-122 (miR-122) in COVID-19 patients, finding no link with standard remdesivir treatment but a positive association with paracetamol use. Further research is needed on COVID-19 treatments and liver injury biomarkers.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Virology
  • Biomarker Research

Background:

  • Abnormal liver function tests are common in COVID-19 patients.
  • Hepatocellular injury due to treatments requires further investigation.
  • MicroRNA-122 (miR-122) is a sensitive and specific biomarker for liver health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess circulating miR-122 levels in COVID-19 patients.
  • To identify potential treatment-associated hepatocellular injury.
  • To explore factors influencing miR-122 expression during COVID-19 treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 96 participants (78 COVID-19, 18 controls).
  • Plasma miR-122 levels measured by quantitative PCR.
  • Dynamic assessment of miR-122 in relation to treatments and clinical parameters.

Main Results:

  • No association found between miR-122 and standard remdesivir treatment durations (3-5 days).
  • Positive association between prior paracetamol use and follow-up miR-122 levels.
  • Inverse correlation between baseline miR-122 and inflammatory markers; positive association with lymphocyte count.

Conclusions:

  • Standard remdesivir treatment did not correlate with miR-122 levels.
  • Paracetamol use may influence miR-122 expression in COVID-19 patients.
  • miR-122 shows complex interactions with inflammation and lymphocyte counts in COVID-19.
