Hepatitis D Infection: a puzzle still unsolved?

Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) infection, also known as "delta" hepatitis, remains one of the most severe forms of viral hepatitis. First discovered in 1977, HDV affects approximately 5% of individuals with chronic Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection, translating to around 10-20 million people globally. Over 40 years after the discovery of HDV, our understanding of the virus and its associated disease remains incomplete. However, recent advances in therapeutic research offer new hope for patients with Hepatitis D. With the ongoing development of targeted therapies and the combination of various pharmacological approaches, a significant breakthrough in the treatment of this severe viral infection is on the horizon.
