Summary

No optic pit retinoschisis (NOPIR) can lead to glaucoma, often developing after initial diagnosis. Early screening and visual field testing are recommended for NOPIR patients to monitor for glaucoma development.

Background:

  • Peripapillary and macular retinoschisis can occur without optic pits or advanced glaucomatous optic atrophy.
  • This condition is termed no optic pit retinoschisis (NOPIR).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define the clinical features of no optic pit retinoschisis (NOPIR).
  • To investigate the association between NOPIR and glaucoma development.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series at The University of Osaka Hospital.
  • Review of clinical characteristics and treatment history for 13 eyes of 12 patients with NOPIR.

Main Results:

  • Glaucoma was present at baseline in 2 eyes and developed later in 10 eyes (91%) after a mean of 31.6 months.
  • Vitrectomy (6 eyes) resulted in faster retinoschisis resolution (14.7 months) compared to observation (7 eyes, 52.4 months).
  • Glaucoma diagnosis occurred sooner in the vitrectomy group (9.5 months) versus the observation group (35.6 months).

Conclusions:

  • NOPIR can be associated with concurrent or subsequent glaucoma development.
  • Regular glaucoma screening and visual field testing are crucial for patients diagnosed with NOPIR.
