In unity through diversity, the Maghreb countries share a rich sociocultural heritage with the peaceful coexistence of the three Abrahamic religions for centuries. Religious orders, especially Catholic missionaries, have played crucial roles in socioeconomic development including health care. As bishop of Hippo, around present-day Annaba in Algeria, Saint Augustine dispensed authoritative teachings, specially on sexuality and family life, with a profound impact and lasting influence on Catholicism. As an Augustinian, Pope Leo XIV is well-placed to promote and strengthen dialogue between religions and improve sociopolitical relations in the region through the religious diplomacy of the papal visit in mid-April 2026.
