Abstract:
Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) presents several learning challenges during dermatology residency, particularly in mastering concepts such as tissue orientation and depth as well as the shifting architecture of tissue during histopathologic preparation. Given the complexity of this process, it is essential for dermatology residents to have access to a low-stakes, hands-on method for practicing tumor removal, mapping, and slide preparation to better understand the spatial dynamics of cutaneous specimens. We provide step-by-step instructions for an interactive learning model using foam blocks designed to help dermatology residents practice and internalize the key steps in performing MMS.
