Altered Bone Geometry and Quality in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Insights from Peripheral Quantitative Computed

Background:
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for skeletal fragility, independent of bone mineral density (BMD).
Objective:
This prospective, cross-sectional case-control study investigated bone geometry using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) in 100 patients with T2DM.
Methodology:
100 cases of Type 2 DM and healthy cohorts were compared for bone geometry at a tertiary care hospital.
Results:
Trabecular density was notably reduced in men, while both periosteal and endosteal circumferences were significantly diminished in both sexes, suggesting cortical thinning and compromised bone geometry.
Conclusion:
The findings suggest that pQCT provides valuable insights into microarchitectural deficits, explaining the increased fracture risk in T2DM.
