Study of Histopathologic Changes in the Pericoronal Tissue of Impacted Mandibular Third Molar

Aim:
This study aims to evaluate the histopathologic spectrum of such changes and determine the frequency and types of odontogenic pathologies present in the pericoronal tissue.
Materials And Methods:
A tertiary dental facility conducted this prospective investigation on 150 patients aged 15 to 35 years with impacted mandibular third molars. After clinical and radiographic evaluation, pericoronal tissues were extracted and histopathologically analyzed. Tooth angulation, impaction site, pericoronal radiolucency width, and epithelial and connective tissue characteristics were examined.
Results:
Mesioangular impaction was the most common orientation (38.7%), followed by vertical (28.7%), distoangular (18%), and horizontal (14.7%). No statistically significant correlation was found between tooth position or radiolucency width and age or histological outcome (P > 0.05).
Conclusion:
Even in asymptomatic instances, impacted mandibular third molar pericoronal tissues showed histopathologic changes.
