Genetic transformation in monocots, especially grasses, remains challenging and limits genome-editing applications. Plant viral vectors offer a transformation- and tissue culture-free alternative. Representative systems, such as barley stripe mosaic virus and barley yellow striate mosaic virus, enable heritable editing in several grass species and show strong potential for development into advanced genome-editing platforms.
