Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

95.9K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

5.5K
The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:
As a result of their tendency to use...

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

Effect of Hepatic Disease on Pharmacokinetics: Dose Adjustments Due to Hepatic Impairment

335
Hepatic impairment, characterized by decreased liver function, does not uniformly mandate adjustments in drug dosage. Whether dosage modifications are necessary depends on various factors related to the drug's metabolism and elimination pathways. If a drug is primarily excreted via the kidneys and bypasses significant hepatic processing, if it undergoes minimal metabolic transformation in the liver, or if it is volatile and primarily expelled through the lungs, dose adjustments may not be...

An interdisciplinary team includes many healthcare professionals working together and utilizing their skills, knowledge, and expertise to provide holistic and quality patient care. Here are a few more healthcare professionals.
Physical Therapist
A physical therapist (PT) aims to restore function or prevent additional impairment in a patient following an injury or disease. Massage, heat, cold, water, sonar waves, exercises, and electrical stimulation are some treatments used by PTs to treat...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Workforce Studies
  • Physician Well-being
  • Disability Inclusion in Healthcare

Background:

  • Physicians with disabilities encounter workplace bias, stigma, and lack of accommodations, potentially leading to attrition.
  • Addressing physician attrition is critical given projected shortages and the value of diverse physician perspectives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between disability status, workplace accommodations, and physician workforce attrition.
  • To analyze considerations of leaving medical practice and reductions in clinical hours among physicians.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional survey analysis of the 2022 National Sample Survey of Physicians (n=5917).
  • Logistic regression models assessed associations between disability and attrition, adjusting for covariates.
  • Data included self-reported disability status and accommodation provision.

Main Results:

  • Physicians with disabilities (2.6% of sample) were more likely to consider leaving practice (36.4% vs 23.5%) and reduce hours (43.5% vs 23.7%).
  • Disability was associated with increased odds of considering leaving practice (OR, 2.22) and reducing hours (OR, 1.94).
  • Physicians with disabilities receiving accommodations were less likely to intend to leave practice.

Conclusions:

  • Physicians with disabilities face higher rates of workforce attrition compared to their peers.
  • Inclusive workplace cultures and effective accommodation processes are vital for retaining physicians with disabilities.
  • Supporting physicians with disabilities enhances workforce stability and patient care.
