Randomized Experiments01:13

Randomized Experiments

9.3K
The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

Group Design02:01

Group Design

11.0K
The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between...

Blinding01:11

Blinding

4.1K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

522
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Study Designs in Epidemiology01:20

Study Designs in Epidemiology

1.5K
Epidemiological study designs are fundamental tools for investigating the distribution, determinants, and control of health conditions in populations. They help researchers understand the relationships between exposures and outcomes, and they broadly fall into two categories: "observational" and "experimental" studies.
Observational studies are those where the researcher does not intervene but rather observes natural variations. They include cross-sectional, cohort, and...

Strategies for Assessing and Addressing Confounding01:25

Strategies for Assessing and Addressing Confounding

530
Confounding is a critical issue in epidemiological studies, often leading to misleading conclusions about associations between exposures and outcomes. It occurs when the relationship between the exposure and the outcome is mixed with the effects of other factors that influence the outcome. Given that, addressing confounding is of high importance for drawing accurate inferences in research.
Confounding can be addressed at both the design phase of a study and through analytical methods after data...

This summary is machine-generated.

A resource menu, not social risk screening, better identifies caregivers' desire for social resources. This approach enhances engagement with essential support services.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Patient Engagement

Background:

  • Social risk screening is increasingly used in healthcare.
  • Screening may not align with resource desire and can deter resource acceptance due to fear of repercussions.
  • Existing evidence suggests a disconnect between screening outcomes and patient interest in social resources.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of social risk screening versus a resource menu on caregivers' desire for and engagement with social resources.
  • To compare the effectiveness of different methods for eliciting needs among caregivers in a pediatric hospital setting.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving adult caregivers in emergency and primary care clinics.
  • Participants were assigned to a social risk screener, a resource menu, or no social assessment.
  • Outcomes included desire for resources, engagement with navigation, and reported resource use at 30-day follow-up, analyzed using chi-squared tests and regression.
  • Main Results:

    • The resource menu arm showed a significantly higher proportion of caregivers desiring resources compared to the screening arm (38.4% vs 29.0%).
    • Caregivers preferring non-English languages were more likely to desire resources with a menu (OR 2.7).
    • A dose-response relationship was observed between engagement with navigation and the number of desired resource domains; 40.1% reported using the resource map.

    Conclusions:

    • A resource menu effectively elicits caregivers' desire for social resources by focusing on prioritized needs.
    • Social risk screening is not necessary for identifying caregivers' needs for social resources.
    • This approach can improve the connection between patients and needed social support services.
