Abstract:
The structural and luminescence properties of single-phase Na3.6Y1.8-xScx(PO4)3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.7, x = 1.8) phosphors have been studied for the first time. X-ray diffraction revealed the formation of a homogeneous solid solution with a NASICON-type structure. No phase transitions were observed by Raman spectroscopy within the 88-873 K temperature range. The bandgap of Na3.6Y1.8-xScx(PO4)3 solid solutions was estimated to be Eg ∼ 8 eV, showing no significant dependence on composition. Luminescence properties were examined under VUV, synchrotron, and electron beam irradiation. An intense UV emission was observed under VUV and synchrotron excitation, attributed to 2pO-3dSc self-trapped excitons. Enhanced intensity and thermal stability of exciton emission are detected for solid solutions and related to the effect of structural disorder.

Ionic Crystal Structures
Most monatomic ions behave as charged spheres, and their attraction for ions of opposite charge is the same in every direction. Consequently, stable structures for ionic compounds result (1) when ions of one charge are surrounded by as many ions as possible of the opposite...

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.
CFT focuses on...
