Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Background:

Newly graduated nurses require effective strategies to master medication administration.
Self-reflection is crucial for developing clinical competence and safe practice.
Technology integration in nursing education offers innovative learning opportunities.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a smartphone-assisted self-reflection program for medication administration skills among newly graduated nurses.
To assess the program's impact on nurses' confidence, satisfaction, and flow.
To explore nurses' experiences and perceptions of the self-reflection program.

Main Methods:

A convergent parallel mixed-methods design incorporating quantitative and qualitative data.
Quantitative: 77 nurses completed pre- and post-intervention assessments of confidence, satisfaction, and flow.
Qualitative: 10 nurses participated in in-depth interviews exploring their experiences with the program.

Main Results:

Significant improvement in medication administration confidence post-intervention (P < .001).
High program satisfaction (mean=4.66) and flow (mean=4.33) scores.
Qualitative themes revealed benefits of self-observation via video, group debriefing, and learning from errors.

Conclusions:

Smartphone-assisted self-reflection is an effective educational strategy for enhancing medication administration skills.
The program fosters reflective practice and contributes to safer medication administration.
Integrating technology can support the development of newly graduated nurses' clinical competence.
