Rasch Analysis of the Multidimensional Clinical Competency Instrument for Newly Graduated Nurses

Background and Purpose: This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the 46-item Multidimensional Clinical Competency Instrument (MCCI) for newly graduated nurses (NGNs) using Rasch analysis. Methods: A national sample of 405 NGNs completed the MCCI on a 5-point scale. Due to the underutilization of the lowest category, it was combined with the next one, resulting in a 4-point scale. Each of the six subscales was analyzed separately using the Partial Credit Model. Results: Most items fit Rasch expectations. Collapsing categories resolved threshold disordering. Person reliability was high (expected a posteriori = .95), with six strata; item reliability was .99. Wright maps showed mild ceiling effects but acceptable targeting. Conclusions: The revised MCCI offers reliable, interval-level scores across subscales. A few misfitting items were retained for content coverage. The instrument supports competence assessment, feedback, and program evaluation, with further validation recommended.
