Abstract:
Incorporation of a bicyclo[1.1.1]pentyl framework is a sought-after task in recent organic chemistry. Current methods mostly involve radical or nucleophilic pathways. In this study, we describe a general procedure for the synthesis of bridgehead silylbicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes by electrophilic activation. The process works with various nucleophiles, including amines, thiols, carbon, and heterocycles. Silylamines can be desilylated to offer a complementing strategy to synthesize C-H bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes.

Electrophilic Addition to Alkynes: Halogenation
Halogenation is another class of electrophilic addition reactions where a halogen molecule gets added across a π bond. In alkynes, the presence of two π bonds allows for the addition of two equivalents of halogens (bromine or chlorine). The addition of the first halogen molecule forms a trans-dihaloalkene as the major product and the cis isomer as the minor product. Subsequent addition of the second equivalent yields the tetrahalide.
