Celastrus paniculatus Willd.: An Extensive Review of Phytochemistry, Traditional Uses, Pharmacological Potential, and
1Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Natural Products, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, India.
Abstract:
Celastrus paniculatus Willd., a perennial, climbing shrub, holds a significant place in traditional Indian medical systems, including Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha. Its broad therapeutic relevance is underpinned by a chemically diverse phytoprofile, including volatile oils, sesquiterpenes, triterpenoids, and alkaloids. This review critically synthesizes published literature and patent data, offering insights into the plant's phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, toxicological profile, and economic botanical significance. A systematic literature review was conducted across multiple scientific databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, encompassing publications up to August 2024. This work consolidates current knowledge on the traditional uses, botanical characteristics, bioactive constituents, and experimentally validated therapeutic effects of C. paniculatus. Notably, this is the first review to integrate global patent intelligence, economic botanical metrics, and sustainable development goal (SDG)-aligned sustainability frameworks, thereby positioning C. paniculatus as an underexplored yet high-value candidate for next-generation neurotherapeutic development. Despite compelling preclinical evidence, randomized controlled trials in humans are currently absent. Future research should focus on clinical validation, standardization of phytopharmaceutical quality, and translational strategies to facilitate its evidence-based incorporation into contemporary healthcare systems.
