Unseen guidance: Radiographers' challenges and practices in supporting blind and visually impaired patients

Introduction:
Individuals who are blind and visually impaired (VI) face substantial barriers to equitable healthcare; however, radiographers' preparedness to care for this population remains underexplored. This study examined radiographers' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perceived barriers when caring for blind and VI patients in the UAE.
Methods:
Using convenience and snowball sampling, an online prevalidated questionnaire was administered to 122 radiographers. Developed in accordance with CHERRIES guidelines, the survey assessed demographics, knowledge, attitudes, practices, and barriers. Test-retest reliability demonstrated strong consistency (r = 0.82). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparative tests.
Results:
Most respondents reported providing verbal explanations (83.6%), verifying understanding (86.9%), and offering additional time (80.3%). Radiographers with 10 or more years of experience demonstrated significantly higher communication competence (77.4% vs. less experienced groups; p = 0.016) and greater adherence to recommended practices. However, critical gaps emerged: 64.8% cited insufficient training, 59.0% reported technology-related communication challenges, 54.1% identified limited resources, and 50.0% noted restrictive organizational policies. PhD holders reported encountering significantly more technological barriers (p = 0.048).
Conclusion:
Substantial variation in knowledge and practices underscores the need for targeted educational interventions and institutional support. While clinical experience enhances communication competence, it cannot replace formal training. Integrating VI-specific content into curricula, implementing standardized departmental protocols, and providing continuing professional development are essential to ensure consistent, patient-centered radiographic care.
Implications For Practice:
Strengthening radiographers' preparedness requires structured educational strategies and robust institutional backing. Simulation-based training, clear communication guidelines, and technology-focused support can equip radiographers to confidently meet the needs of blind and VI patients, advancing health equity in diagnostic imaging.
