Objectives:
Specific oncology training and education are needed to be incorporated into pharmacy curriculum. The National Community Oncology Dispensing Association (NCODA) developed the Oncology Basics Course to address gaps in oncology training and was piloted to student pharmacists as an elective at Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (WSU CPPS). This study describes course design, implementation and impact on student perceived confidence, knowledge and preparedness in various oncology topics.
Methods:
A task force was comprised and aided with the development of a 15-h online course through NCODA. Those enrolled in the course at WSU CPPS completed a pre-survey and post-survey that assessed the student pharmacists confidence, knowledge, and perceptions of oncology related topics. Course performance and survey data were analyzed after the course was completed.
Results:
Forty-six students were enrolled in the course with a successful completion rate of 98%. Survey data demonstrated an increase in student confidence in oncology knowledge and ability to communicate with oncology patients. Participation in the course did not have a significant impact on interest in pursuing a career in oncology or that a course dedicated to oncology should be included in the curriculum or the importance of oncology knowledge for future pharmacy careers.
Conclusion:
The NCODA Oncology Basics Course improved student pharmacist perceived confidence and knowledge in oncology topics. This course has the potential to address gaps in oncology education and could be integrated into pharmacy curriculum to better prepare students for oncology related patient care.
