Validity and Reliability Study of the Second-Hand Smoking Knowledge Test

Abstract:
Background and Purpose: Second-hand smoke exposure poses significant public health risks, yet few instruments measure individuals' knowledge on this topic. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Second-Hand Smoking Knowledge Test in the Turkish population. Methods: A methodological design was employed with 368 adults. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, content validity index, Cronbach's alpha, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Results: The 13-item scale comprised four subdimensions-awareness, health effects, passive exposure, and smoking/nonsmoking areas. Cronbach's alpha was .749, indicating acceptable reliability. Model fit indices supported the four-factor structure (χ²/degree of freedom = 3.02; root-mean-square error of approximation = .074). Conclusions: The test is a valid and reliable tool for assessing knowledge about second-hand smoking in Turkey.
