Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters

2.7K
The introduction of polyesters has brought major development to the textile industry. The wrinkle-free behavior of polyester blends has eliminated the need for starching and ironing clothes.
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...

Bioplastics

48
Bioplastics derived from microbial processes present a sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. Among these, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), particularly polyhydroxybutyrates (PHBs), have emerged as prominent candidates due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility. These polymers are synthesized by a variety of bacteria, such as Cupriavidus necator and Pseudomonas putida, which naturally accumulate PHAs as intracellular carbon and energy reserves, especially under...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Textile Chemistry
  • Biomimetics

Background:

  • Polyester fabrics are popular for durability but struggle with achieving deep black colors due to high refractive index.
  • Existing methods for deep black dyeing are often insufficient or lack durability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an effective method for enhancing the color depth of extra deep black polyester fabrics.
  • To implement a bioinspired strategy mimicking the moth-eye antireflection effect.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesized a core-shell latex (MD@PDMS) using methyl methacrylate (MMA), diallyl terephthalate (DATP), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via semicontinuous seed emulsion polymerization.
  • Applied the MD@PDMS deepening agent to polyester fabrics.

Main Results:

  • Achieved a significant enhancement in color depth of up to 67% for extra deep black polyester.
  • Improved wash fastness, rubbing resistance, and fabric hand feel.
  • Maintained excellent air permeability and enhanced hydrophobicity.

Conclusions:

  • The bioinspired MD@PDMS deepening agent provides a durable and high-performance solution for achieving extra deep black polyester.
  • This approach offers a promising strategy for industrial applications in textile finishing.
