Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

659
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Summary

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) offers better cosmetic results and fewer side effects for early-stage breast cancer patients compared to external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). This study highlights improved patient-reported outcomes for IORT in breast cancer treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Early-stage breast cancer treatment often involves radiation therapy.
  • Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is an alternative to conventional external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).
  • Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are crucial for evaluating treatment efficacy and patient satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare patient-reported cosmetic outcomes after IORT versus EBRT for early-stage breast cancer.
  • To assess and compare radiation-related adverse effects experienced by patients treated with IORT versus EBRT.
  • To evaluate patient satisfaction with breast cosmesis following different radiation therapy modalities.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of early-stage breast cancer patients treated with IORT (2017-2023) was identified.
  • A matched cohort of patients treated with EBRT during the same period was selected.
  • The validated BREAST-Q survey was administered to both groups to assess cosmetic results and adverse effects.

Main Results:

  • Eighty-eight patients (56 invasive ductal carcinoma, 32 DCIS) were analyzed.
  • Patients receiving IORT reported higher satisfaction with breast cosmesis (mean 83.7) compared to EBRT (mean 74.2; p=0.05).
  • Fewer radiation-related adverse effects were observed in the IORT group (mean 7.7) versus the EBRT group (mean 10.6; p<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • IORT is associated with superior cosmetic outcomes and patient satisfaction in early-stage breast cancer.
  • Patients treated with IORT experience significantly fewer radiation-related adverse effects compared to EBRT.
  • IORT represents a favorable treatment option for improving quality of life in breast cancer patients.
