This study explored the relationship between sleep quality and psychological stress in college students, focusing on the mediating roles of excessive daytime sleepiness and academic performance. Data from 4633 students were collected between November 2021 and January 2022 using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Simplified Chinese version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. Logistic regression revealed a significant link between sleep quality and psychological stress (p < 0.001). Mediation analysis indicated that excessive daytime sleepiness and academic performance mediated this relationship, with proportional effects of 7.44%, 4.98%, respectively. The findings suggest that psychological stress is prevalent among college students and that sleep quality plays a significant role in stress. Prioritizing sleep and mental health support is essential to reducing future stress in students.
