Summary

Engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) significantly lowers risks for sarcopenia, fractures, and falls. Even small amounts of vigorous activity offer benefits for bone health and preventing falls.

Background:

  • Inconsistent findings exist regarding physical activity (PA) and risks of sarcopenia, fractures, and falls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the associations between accelerometer-derived PA data and risks of probable sarcopenia, fractures, and falls.
  • To investigate dose-response relationships between PA and these adverse health outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 80,804 UK Biobank participants with accelerometer-derived PA.
  • Employed Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic splines to analyze associations and dose-response relationships.
  • Primary outcomes included probable sarcopenia, fractures, and falls; secondary outcomes were recurrent fractures and falls.

Main Results:

  • Guideline-adherent moderate to vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) (150-300 min/week) was linked to significantly lower risks: 30% for sarcopenia, 41% for fractures, and 47% for falls.
  • A low dose of vigorous-intensity PA (0-25 min/wk) demonstrated benefits for incident probable sarcopenia, fractures, and falls.
  • Significant risk reductions were observed for recurrent fractures (40%) and recurrent falls (47%) with adequate MVPA.

Conclusions:

  • Higher levels of MVPA and engaging in multiple types of PA are associated with reduced risks of probable sarcopenia, fractures, and falls.
  • Objective PA measurement provides valuable insights into preventing age-related conditions and injuries.
