Theory-based interventions effectively improve children's toothbrushing habits. This review found that using behavior change theories significantly increased self-reported brushing frequency and self-efficacy in children.
Area of Science:
- Oral Health
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Behavior change theories are increasingly used in oral health to modify toothbrushing.
- This review focuses on interventions for children aged 18 and below.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the effectiveness of interventions for improving home-based toothbrushing in children.
- To understand how behavior change theories inform the design and methodology of these interventions.
Main Methods:
- A scoping review using the JBI methodology.
- Searched PubMed, Scopus, and BASE databases for literature from 1980 to April 2025.
- Included keywords related to behavior change theory, toothbrushing, and children; screening by three reviewer teams.
Main Results:
- Twenty-one studies (2011-2024) utilized theories like Social Cognitive Theory and Theory of Planned Behaviour.
- 71.4% of studies reported increased self-reported toothbrushing frequency; others showed no significant improvement.
- Increased self-efficacy (52.4%) and knowledge (33.3%) were noted.
Conclusions:
- Theory-based interventions for toothbrushing in children have become more common since 2011.
- These interventions demonstrate effectiveness in enhancing home-based toothbrushing behaviors in children.
