[An analysis of the elderly population in South Africa]

The aging of South Africa's population has accelerated in recent decades and must be considered in close connection with historical and socioeconomic inequalities, particularly those inherited from apartheid. The health, economic, and social challenges faced by older people, who are often vulnerable and dependent on state subsidies, are numerous and growing. The family structure, characterized by multigenerational households, plays a central role in supporting them despite limited resources. To address the challenge of an aging population in the country, and improve the quality of life of older adults in this complex context, it is necessary to develop an inclusive, comprehensive, and tailored policy approach.
