Summary

Predicting acute myocarditis prognosis is challenging. Longer QRS duration over 130 ms at admission independently predicts adverse in-hospital outcomes for acute myocarditis patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify prognosticators for hospitalized acute myocarditis patients.
  • To determine predictors of adverse outcomes during hospitalization.

Main Methods:

  • Multicenter observational study.
  • Inclusion of 80 hospitalized AM patients.
  • Primary endpoint: composite of all-cause death, heart transplantation, or ventricular assist device implantation.

Main Results:

  • 13% of patients experienced an adverse outcome.
  • Longer QRS duration at admission was an independent predictor of adverse outcomes.
  • Optimal QRS duration cut-off identified as 130 ms.

Conclusions:

  • Prolonged QRS duration at admission may predict in-hospital prognosis for AM patients.
  • This predictive value holds true irrespective of fulminant presentation.
