[Headache in cerebrovascular diseases]

Headache is a common symptom of cerebrovascular diseases. This paper presents a literature review with a search depth of 20 years on the clinical features of headache as a criterion for diagnosing or raising clinical suspicion of acute or chronic cerebrovascular disease. The authors studied the most common diseases in clinical practice, focusing on headache causes in the «Headache attributed to cranial or cervical vascular disorder» section of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (3^rd edition, 2018). Headaches of various origins are considered: associated with ischemic stroke, thrombosis of the main artery, cerebellar stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, arteritis; arising from a transient ischemic attack, with an unruptured arterial aneurysm of the brain, with dissection of the cervical-cephalic arteries, with thrombosis of the veins and sinuses of the brain, with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome; caused by non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage, as well as genetic vasculopathy. The features of the headache assessment in patients with cognitive impairment are addressed.
