Abstract:
The conservation of plant genetic resources is carried out to protect species that are in danger of extinction, under special protection, or due to their economic and ecological importance. For the conservation of forest genetic resources, ex situ conservation in a germplasm bank is preferable to field conservation, as the latter increases conservation costs. One of the techniques for long-term conservation is cryopreservation using the vitrification method. This method allows plant tissue to be frozen at a temperature of -196°C, without the formation of ice crystals and thus avoiding damage to the cell wall. This way, plant material is preserved for a long period by halting its metabolism. Furthermore, forest species such as Gmelina arborea Roxb. They are genetic resources of ecological and economic importance for Mexico, so their long-term conservation is of vital importance in order to take advantage of this resource in the future.
