Standardized radar wind profiler dataset via integrated raw data processing in Korea

UHF/VHF radar wind profilers provide valuable data for analyzing the structure and dynamics of the lower atmosphere (approximately 0.1 to 8 km above ground level), including vertical and horizontal wind profiles, precipitation, and turbulence, which are crucial for enhancing weather forecasts, climate research, and aviation safety. In Korea, however, raw data from operational UHF radar wind profilers (four manufacturers, six models) are stored in incompatible formats, limiting their direct use. To address this, we developed an integrated processing methodology to standardize these diverse raw data and created a unified NetCDF-format dataset optimized for large-scale data management. The dataset includes raw spectra, spectral moments, and re-processed deliverables like vertical and horizontal wind profiles and turbulence parameters, providing advanced capabilities beyond the basic outputs provided by manufacturers. By providing researchers with easy access to standardized wind profiler data, it enhances the utility of the instrument and broadens the scope of meteorological research.
