Abstract:
Clinical teaching is a key component in the training of health professionals; however, its proper implementation requires not only clinical experience but also specific pedagogical preparation.
Aim:
To characterizes the teaching experience and training of health professionals serving as clinical tutors in primary care facilities in a municipality of the Metropolitan Region of Chile.
Methods:
A descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted through the in-person administration of a peer-validated survey to 190 health professionals. Participants included professionals who had been working in primary health care for more than one year.
Results:
A total of 87.4% of respondents had engaged in clinical teaching, although only 23.5% had received specific training in this area. Most rated their performance as clinical tutors as "good" or "excellent" and expressed a strong willingness to continue or begin teaching activities. Additionally, more than 90% showed interest in receiving pedagogical training, particularly valuing topics such as teaching methodologies, assessment, and feedback.
Conclusions:
The study reveals high participation of health professionals in clinical teaching within primary care, along with a positive perception of this role. However, over 75% lack specific training, despite expressing interest in acquiring it. These findings highlight the need to implement structured training programs that strengthen teaching competencies, improve the quality of education, and contribute to the continuous professional development of clinical tutors, thereby enhancing the training process of future health professionals.
