Background:

  • Unintentional injuries (UIs) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States.
  • Subsequent UIs are a leading cause of death for adults with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI).
  • The influence of psychoactive substance (PAS) use on UIs in TSCI populations requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of fall-related and non-fall-related UIs post-rehabilitation discharge.
  • To analyze the association between PAS usage and different types of UIs in adults with TSCI.

Main Methods:

  • Adults with TSCI were identified from the SCI Model Systems (SCIMS) database.
  • Data on UIs and PAS usage (WHO ASSIST Phase II) were collected at admission and 1-year follow-up.
  • Logistic regression models assessed the link between PAS use and UI types, controlling for covariates.

Main Results:

  • 15% of 316 participants reported at least one UI within the past year.
  • PAS usage showed a significant association with fall-related UIs.
  • No significant association was found between PAS usage and non-fall-related UIs.
