Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Captive Primates

Introduction:
This study aimed to diagnose the presence of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in captive primates in the State of Pará, Brazil.
Materials And Methods:
Fecal samples were collected from 76 captive Neotropical primates representing 13 species. Samples were obtained immediately after defecation, refrigerated without preservatives, and processed within 48 h. The central portion of each sample was examined for Giardia spp. cysts and Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts using direct Lugol staining and modified Ziehl-Neelsen techniques, respectively. A RIDAQUICK Cryptosporidium/Giardia/Entamoeba Combi (N1722) commercial immunological test was used for the detection of both protozoan parasites.
Results:
Among the samples analyzed, 10.5% (8/76) were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. and 5.2% (4/76) for Giardia spp., totaling 15.7% (12/76) infected animals, including one case of coinfection (1.3%). These findings demonstrate the occurrence of these protozoa in captive primates and highlight their potential role as zoonotic risk factors.
