Abstract:
This article reviews the noninsulin medications to treat type 2 diabetes, including their mechanism of action, efficacy, safety, and clinical considerations. It highlights the shift in the treatment of diabetes from a glucose-centric to a patient-centered approach, with emphasis on the importance of choosing therapy based on the evidence to improve outcomes and prevent comorbidities. Major classes discussed include biguanides (metformin), insulin secretagogues (sulfonylureas, meglitinides), thiazolidinediones, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors, DPP4 inhibitors, GLP1 receptor agonists, dual GLP1/GIP receptor agonists, and amylin analogs.
